Tour of the Northern Andes

Experience the fascinating northern Andes mountain region on this 16-day tour. Admire the breathtaking scenery of the Cordillera Central, step back in time in the charming colonial towns and visit typical Andes Mountain villages steeped in ancient folklore and traditions. TRAVELOGUE
 
Day 1: Guayaquil 
Upon arrival in Guayaquil transfer to your hotel. 
 
Day 2: Guayaquil - Cajas National Park - Cuenca 
In the morning you travel to Cajas National Park. More than 200 lagoons dot the park at an elevation that ranges from 10,300 ft to 14,600 ft. After a short walk, you continue the drive through the beautiful and varied landscape to Cuenca - often hailed as the most beautiful colonial city in South America. Lunch included. 
 
Day 3: Cuenca 
A city tour introduces you to the colonial historic center with its many churches, lovely squares and narrow streets packed with beautifully restored colonial houses. Visit the famous flower market. Lunch included. The rest of day is free to explore at your leisure. 
 
Day 4:Cuenca - Alausí - Riobamba 
In the morning we travel from Cuenca to Alausi. Along the way you visit the Inca ruins at Ingapirca. In Alausí awaits a breathtaking train ride across the steep switchbacks of the "Devil's of Nose". Next you continue to Riobamba. Packed lunch. 
 
Day 5:Riobamba - Cotopaxi - Quito 
Today’s drive goes along the impressive “Volcano Road” to Cotopaxi National Park. Enjoy a 2-3 hour hike in the park which boasts spectacular views of the highest active volcano in the world. Picnic lunch before continuing along the Pan-American Highway to Quito, approximately a 3-hour drive. 
 
Day 6: Quito 
Today you explore Quito, the capital of Ecuador, known for its beautiful natural setting. The historic part of the city has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A city tour will take you to the most impressive sights of this metropolis, such as the government buildings, the Plaza de la Independencia and the San Francisco church. Then you visit the Equatorial monument, marking the location where an imaginary line divides the world into a northern and southern hemisphere. 
 
Day 7: Quito - Otavalo 
In the morning you visit the busy Indian market in Otavalo. Explore the town and the surrounding region. Visit Lake Cuicocha, located in the crater of an extinct volcano. After a visit to the town of Cotacachi, known for its leather goods, you can enjoy an optional two-hour walk in the Cuicocha lake region. Lunch included. 
 
Day 8: Otavalo - Pasto 
After breakfast you begin the drive to Colombia. Before arriving in Pasto, today’s final destination, you visit the famous pilgrimage church in Las Lajas. The drive north, along the Pan-American Highway, takes you through the lush foothills of the Cordillera Central. 
 
Day 9: Pasto - Popayán 
After breakfast you travel further north to Popayán, the cultural center of the Cauca region. A city tour introduces you to the main cultural treasures of Popayán. 
 
Day 10:Popayán - San Agustin 
Travel by jeep through the impressive rugged Andes region of Colombia. On the way to San Agustin you drive past typical Andes mountain villages. 
 
Day 11: San Agustin 
Today is dedicated to a comprehensive visit to the archeological park in San Agustin. 35 large pre-Columbian sculptures, collected from various grave monuments in the region, are on display here. The height of this Indian civilization was approx. around the year 1000. 
 
Day 12:San Agustin - Coffee region 
After breakfast you travel along the Rio Magdalena to Neiva. From here you fly via Bogotá to the Coffee Region. In the nearby village of Pereiras you visit a coffee plantation and learn all about the coffee culture and production. 
 
Day 13: The Coffee region 
Today’s excursion takes you to the beautiful Cocora valley. Explore this region on foot and on horseback, admire the typical local architecture and learn more about the lives of the local residents who make a living growing coffee. 
 
Day 14:The Coffee region - Bogotá 
After breakfast transfer to the airport for your short flight to Bogotá, the capital of Colombia. City tour and a visit to the Plaza de Bolivar, the colonial historic center of La Candelaria, the San Francisco church and La Tercera, the world famous gold museum and the house of Simon Bolivar. Complete the sightseeing with a cable car ride to the top of Montserrate Mountain to take in the fabulous views over the city and the surrounding savanna landscape. 
 
Day 15: Bogotá 
In the morning transfer to the airport.
