20-DAY TOUR FROM LIMA TO RIO DE JANEIRO

Across South America

This combination tour of South America takes you from the Pacific to the Atlantic, from the Inca culture to the modern and vibrant cities of Buenos Aires and Rio de Janeiro. The capital of the Inca empire, Cuzco is a lovely town with its colonial buldings, narrow cobblestone streets and a beautiful and varied landscape. One of the most fascinating sights is Machu Picchu, an incredible ruin complex in the middle of a mountainous jungle region. Visit the vibrant city of Buenos Aires and the breathtaking waterfalls in Iguaçú before finishing your trip in style in exotic Rio de Janeiro.
TRAVELOGUE
 
Day 1: Lima 
Arrival in Lima transfer from the airport to the hotel. The rest of the day is free for your own activities. 
 
Day 2: Lima 
City tour of the impressive Plaza de Armas, the Plaza San Martin, the government palaces, the gold museum and the modern neighborhood of Miraflores. 
 
Day 3: Lima – Cuzco 
Flight to Cuzco, the former capital of the Inca empire, located at an elevation of 11.150 ft. The rest of the day is free to explore on your own. Take some time to acclimatize to the thin air. 
 
Day 4: Cuzco 
Half-day tour of the highlights of the city such as the Plaza de Arma , the cathedral, the Santo Domingo convent and the nearby Inca ruins of Sacsayhuaman. 
 
Day 5: Cuzco 
Visit the Indian market in Pisac and the ruins of a former Inca fortress at Ollantaytambo. Lunch included. 
 
Day 6: Cuzco – Machu Picchu – Cuzco 
Today you will see one of the highlights of this tour, Machu Picchu. Board the narrow gauge railway in Cuzco early in the morning. After approx. 3 hours of traveling through the rugged Urubamba valley you reach these fascinating Inca monuments. Extensive tour of the ruins. Overnight stay in Cuzco. 
 
Day 7: Cuzco – Puno 
Early morning departure on the train that takes you through the highland plateau to Puno on Lake Titicaca. Enjoy the spectacular views of the Andes Mountains on this 10-hour train ride. Arrival in Puno in the evening. Lunch included. 
 
Day 8: Puno – Island of the Sun 
Travel from Puno to Juli. short sightseeing tour of Juli. Board a hydrofoil and continue to the Island of the Sun. Tour of the island and overnight stay at a beautiful posada on the Island of the Sun. 
 
Day 9: The Island of the Sun – La Paz 
Travel by hydrofoil from the Island of the Sun to Huatajata. Visit the Island of the Moon along the way. In the afternoon you drive from Huatajata to La Paz. The road takes you along some fabulous mountain scenery. 
 
Day 10: La Paz 
City tour of La Paz. Includes a visit to the Indian market, the San Francisco church, the government palace, the cathedral, the presidential palace, the Museum Casa Murillo and the elegant neighborhoods of Obrajes and Calacoto. Then you visit the Valle de la Luna, a moon-like land­scape with unique rock formations. 
 
Day 11: La Paz-Buenos Aires 
Transfer to the airport for your flight to Buenos Aires, the vibrant capital of Argentina. 
 
Day 12: Buenos Aires 
Visit one of the most elegant cities of South America and stroll the widest boulevard in the world. Don’t miss the opportunity to see a typical Tango show this evening. 
 
Day 13: Buenos Aires – Posadas – Bella Vista 
Early morning flight from Buenos Aires to Posadas in Paraguay. Arrival and transfer to a typical local hotel. In the afternoon you visit an estancia (a cattle ranch) and enjoy a traditional barbeque. 
 
Day 14: Trindidad – Encarnacion 
In the morning you tour the largest Yerba Mate factory in Paraguay. Then you visit the ruins of Trinidad, a UNESCO world heritage site. The afternoon is free to explore the town of Encarnacion on your own. Return to Bella Vista in the early evening. 
 
Day 15: Bella Vista – Foz do Iguaçú 
In the morning you head towards Ciudad del Este where you will visit Itaipu, one of the largest hydro dams in the world. Then you cross the border into Brazil to Foz do Iguaçú. 
 
Day 16: Foz do Iguaçú 
After breakfast you visit the falls on the Argentinean side. A walkway over the falls allows you a very close-up look of these impressive waterfalls. 
 
Day 17: Foz do Iguaçú – Rio de Janerio 
In the morning you visit the falls on the Brazilian side. Afternoon flight to Rio de Janeiro Arrival and transfer to your hotel. 
 
Day 18: Rio de Janeiro 
Full day tour of Rio de Janeiro, considered one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Visit the Sugar Loaf and the Corcovado, Rio’s landmark monuments. 
 
Day 19: Rio de Janeiro 
Today you are free to explore the city on your own. Visit some more of the city’s attractions or spend a relaxing day on the beach. 
 
Day 20: Rio de Janeiro 
Until your departure time you are free to spend the day at your leisure. Transfer to the airport for your return flight.
