8-DAY TOUR FROM/TO GUATEMALA CITY
Guatemala Highlands, Rainforest & TikalTRAVELOGUE Day 1: Guatemala City Arrival at the international airport La Aurora and transfer to your hotel in the city. Day 2: Guatemala City - Antigua After breakfast you set out to explore the metropolis of Guatemala City. Get your bearings at the Mapa en Relief, an enormous three-dimensional map of Guatemala. Next you visit the Plaza Central, the grand square with the national palace and cathedral. The National Museum of Archeology and Ethnology offers you a first glimpse of the country’s rich history. Then you continue to Antigua. Day 3: Antigua -Lake Atitlán/Panajachel In the morning you have time for a walk through this historically important city and see some examples of Antigua’s unique architecture such as the main square and the cathedral. Next we visit ruins of a convent. In the afternoon you travel through the highlands to Panajachel on Lake Atitlán. The lake is surrounded by fertile hills of volcanic soil. Three mighty volcanoes tower high above the lake, lending a unique and mystical aura to the area. Day 4: Lake Atitlán/Panajachel - Chichicastenango - Lake Atitlán/Panajachel Visit one of the prettiest and most colorful markets of the highland Indians in Chichicastenango. Have a look at the traditional hand-made fabrics, the artistic carvings and many other types of unique local handicrafts and utensils from this region. Next we visit the more than 400-year old Santo Tomás church. In the afternoon we travel back to Lake Atitlán. Day 5: Lake Atitlán/Panajachel - Santiago Atitlán - Guatemala City We start the morning with a boat tour on Lake Atitlán. Sailing straight across the lake you reach Santiago Atitlán, one of the indigenous villages in the region that lies at the foot of a mighty volcano. Visit the local market and church in Santiago Atitlán. Travel back to Panajachel by boat. Continue on to Guatemala City. Day 6: Guatemala City - Flores - Tikal - Flores - Petexbatún Early in the morning you fly to Flores, in the capital district Petén. This district lies in the very north of the country and is the most rainforest-rich part of Guatemala. From Flores you travel by bus to the famous Maya monuments of Tikal, nestled deep in the tropical rainforest. This archeological site is the most important and most impressive Maya monument in all of Central America. In the company of a knowledgeable guide you explore the most interesting parts of the complex. Lunch. In the afternoon you have time to visit the museum before we return to Flores and travel on to Sayaxché. Here you board a boat that will take you far off the beaten track to the Petexbatún Lagoon. Spend the night in the Petexbatún Lodge in the middle of the lush tropical rainforest. Enjoy your dinner (included) and take in the sights and sounds of the rainforest; hear the unmistakable, piercing calls of the baboons. Day 7: Petexbatún - Aguateca - Flores - Guatemala City Today you continue by boat to Aguateca. Aguateca was, after Dos Pilas, the second capital of the Maya dynasty in Petexbatún. The city stood on a privileged location, high above the lagoon on a steep, sloped limestone plateau and protected by a steep ravine. After your visit, lunch awaits at the Petexbatún Lodge (included). Return by boat to Sayaxché and transfer to the Flores airport for flight to Guatemala City. Transfer to your city hotel. Day 8: Guatemala City Transfer to the airport for your return flight.
