Grand Chile Tour

Chile offers the spectacular scenery of an entire continent inside of one country: in the north you can experience the unique desert, known as one of the driest and most inhospitable regions of the world. In the south the landscape features luscious green lakes, glaciers, ice bergs, rugged fjords and vast regions of pristine wilderness. Chile – experience this overwhelming and magnificent landscape!
TRAVELOGUE
 
Pre-program Arica 
 
 
Day 1: Arica 
Arrival in Arica, Chile’s most northern city. Transfer to your hotel. In the afternoon city tour of Arica, followed by an excursion to the fertile Azapa valley and a visit to the Pre-Columbian museum, Miguel de Azapa. Return to Arica. Overnight stay. 
 
Day 2: Arica - Putre 
In the morning we begin a twoday trip to the Chilean Altiplano. On the way, stops and side-trips to picturesque pre-Hispanic villages like Pocon chile, where the native Ayamara people still produce potatoes and maize with traditional agricultural methods and terraces. In the Quebrada de Cardones you will see the majestic Candlestick Cactus in its natural desert habitat. As we climb higher into the Andes we encounter pre-Inca pucarás (fortresses), and tambos (inns) which were part of ancient villages and remain as silent reminders of the Tiawanaku and Inca presence in this region. Box lunch included and Dinner at Hosteria. 
 
Day 3: Putre - Lauca Nationalpark - Arica 
After breakfast start of the tour to the Altiplano. You might see a tremendous variety of wildlife including. In the afternoon you will see the snow covered Parinacota Volcano (20.807 ft) and the Lago Chungará, one of the highest lakes in the world, (alt. 14.765 ft). Lauca National Park is one of the most spectacular in Chile. In the evening return to Arica. 
 
Day 4: Arica 
Transfer from your hotel to the airport. 
 
 
Main program 
 
 
Day 1: Santiago 
Arrival at the airport and transfer to your hotel. In the afternoon city tour with the most important sights: presidential palace, Plaza de Armas, the cathedral and the mountain San Cristobal. 
 
Day 2: Santiago – Calama – San Pedro de Atacama & Moon Valley 
Transfer to Santiago airport and flight to Calama. Arrival and transfer to your hotel in the town of San Pedro de Atacama. On route you will have spectacular views of the Cordillera de la Sal. At dusk we set out to the Valley of the Moon to see the sunset in this bizarre, almost lunar landscape formed by the erosion of salt mountains. Strange sculpted rock formations in the middle of the desert, with the Lincancabur Volcano in the background, make for a particularly rare experience. 
 
Day 3: San Pedro & Salar de Atacama 
In the morning we visit the archaeological museum of Padre le Paige, with its famous collection of artefacts which show the development of the Atacameño society. In the afternoon we venture to see the Salar de Atacama. On route we visit the town of Toconao. After Toconao we continue on to visit the world’s largest salt lake: the Salar de Atacama, which is home to various species of fl amingoes. 
 
Day 4: Geysers El Tatio 
Early departure for the Geysers of El Tatio. El Tatio is situated at 14.765 ft above sea level, on the Altiplano. The geysers are spectacular in the early morning. There are about 40 geysers, thermal wells and fumaroles. The early morning light striking the water and steam hurling up from the geysers makes for an unforgettable experience. 
 
Day 5: San Pedro – Puerto Montt – Puerto Varas 
Transfer to Calama airport and flight to Puerto Montt. After reception at the airport in Puerto Montt we begin with a city tour of Puerto Montt itself, the capital of the Lake District. You will see the harbour, the fi sh market Angelmo and the handicraft market. Afterwards transfer to Puerto Varas. 
 
Day 6: Puerto Varas - Peulla 
Transfer along the shores of the Llanquihue Lake with breathtaking view on the volcanoes Osorno and Calbuco. Visit of the waterfalls of Petrohue. Afterwards boarding of the catamaran and crossing of the Todos los Santos lake. You will have a great view to the high mountains and the surrounding volcanoes Osorno and Puntiagudo. After arrival in Peulla hike to the Cascada de la Novia or the Bride’s Waterfall amidst the native growth „Valdivian Rainforest“. In the late afternoon return to Puerto Varas. 
 
Day 7: Puerto Varas - Ancud - Pinuines Puñihuil 
Early departure to drive south and out toward the Pacific, where we cross the straights of Pargua by ferry to the Island of Chiloé. Visit the WWF World Wildlife Fund penguin colony, one of the few places where Magellan and Humboldt penguins live and breed together. Picnic lunch included. Afterwards return to Ancud and visit of the impressing historic fortresses from the time of the Spanish conquest. 
 
Day 8: Puerto Varas - Puerto Natales 
Transfer to airport in Puerto Montt after breakfast and fl ight to Punta Arenas. Drive north through the vast Patagonian „Pampa“ to Puerto Natales. On route we drive along the coast of the steet of Magellan looking across the chilly arctic waters at Tierra del Fuego. En route visit of the penguin colony at Otway estuary (visit of the penguin colony only from mid October to mid March and only if no penguins have been seen on Chiloe island). 
 
Day 9: Torres del Paine 
Full day tour to the Torres del Paine National Park. Walk in the park and get unforgettable views of the Towers and the Torres Massif, Lago Grey and Grey Glacier and tremendous wildlife. We will do some short hikes to reach the most beautiful points of view of this National Park and of course also get to know the diverse wildlife. Transfer to your selected lodge in the National Park in the late afternoon. 
 
Day 10: Torres del Paine - Puerto Natales 
A day in this tremendous park at the end of the world to walk, hike and/or take part in any of the many optional excursions beginning directly at your hotel. Transfer to Puerto Natales in the late afternoon. 
 
Day 11: Santiago 
Transfer to connecting flight in Punta Arenas. Reception at Santiago airport. Transfer to your selected hotel in the heart of the city. 
 
Day 12: Valparaíso & Viña del Mar 
Full day excursion to Valparaíso (optional, not included), the oldest port in Chile. Truly a picturesque city in every respect of the word. During your city tour you visit the new government houses, the Plaza Sotomayor, the Plaza Victoria, the cathedral, the harbor area and “La Sebastiana”, the former house of the Chilean writer and Nobel Prize Winner Pablo Neruda (closed on Mondays). From Valparaíso we continue along the coast to the beautiful beaches of Viña del Mar, the Garden city, named for its many parks and green spaces. 
 
Day 13: Santiago 
Transfer to Santiago airport.
