Argentina

BEST TIME TO TRAVEL • CLIMATE • DRESS

The climate of Argentina can be as diverse as the landscapes. Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego are best visited in the summer months (October through April), although even at the height of summer nice weather cannot be guaranteed. In the north, the weather is warm and dry year-round, although in the Andes Mountains the nights can be quite cold. Rain showers are common in January through March. From May to October, the weather is usually clear with plenty of sunshine.

TRAVEL DOCUMENTS • VACCINATIONS • HEALTH ISSUES

EU, US and Canadian citizens only require a passport, valid for at least 6 months after departure. The general health and hygiene standards are similar to those in Europe. There are no specific health concerns. Vaccinations are not required (exceptions: Northern Argentina and the Easter Islands).

MONEY • ADDITIONAL COSTS • TIPS

US$ 1 = approx. 3.08 Argentinean Pesos. Exchange rate: July 2006.
We recommend bringing some US dollars in cash as well as bringing a credit card or a bank card with the "Maestro" logo, which is widely accepted. Credit cards are widely accepted; expect a 10% surcharge on prices when using a credit card. Tips are commonly given. The tour guide may be tipped US$2-3 per day.

FOOD AND DRINK

First-grade beef forms one of the staples of Argentinean cuisine. Steak is traditionally eaten as asado (grilled), or enjoyed as part of a mixed grill (a platter with several kinds of meat). Empanadas, savory pastries filled with ground beef or cheese, make for a delicious snack. These go particularly well with a local wine or the much enjoyed Mate tea.

Local also enjoy vacationing in their own country. Especially from Christmas until the end of February hotels, flights and busses, particularly in the south, are often fully booked. We recommend reserving as early as possible when traveling during this period!
